owner of a pool hall must figure out in one spring weighing which of his 5 colored balls is heigher?
The owner of a pool hall is offered five bushels of balls, one each of red, blue, green, yellow, and orange. All the balls weigh 100 grams, he learns, except for the balls of one color, which all weigh 110grams.
The owner wants to use a spring scale to find out which color ball is too heavy. Can you work out the minimum number of weightings he must carry out to discover the color of the odd balls? (hint: the answer is one). Now the new question is how did the pool hall owner find the color of the heavy balls in one weighing on the scale? Find a way you can distinguish the color of the ball by how many you put on the scale.
Throw one red, 2 blue, 3 green, and 4 yellow balls on the scale.
If the ten balls weigh 1000g, orange is heavy
if they weigh 1010g, red is heavy
if they weigh 1020g, blue is heavy
if they weigh 1030g, green is heavy
if they weigh 1040g, yellow is heavy
