Does the Cherokee Sport get good gas mileage?
If not what are some good choices for someone who likes vehicles like the Cherokee Sport that get good gas mileage?
If you are in the U.S., I will assume you are referring to the XJ line of Cherokees which Jeep discontinued in 2001.
I owned a 1996 XJ with the 4.0-Liter High Output engine and the Command Trac part-time 4-wheel drive and automatic transmission. I get about 16 miles to the gallon. The XJs remained almost mechanically identical all the way up to 2001.
If you want a compact SUV that gets good fuel economy and you don’t need off-road capability, I agree with the above poster a good option right now is the Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD, which gets about 32mpg, starts at $26,500 and qualifies for a $3100 Federal Tax Credit refund from the IRS for hybrid vehicles.
If you need to go off-road, you will need to sacrifice fuel economy and go for a conventional SUV with a transfer-case to get low-range 4-wheel-drive.
